Choose the type of IRA that fits your needs.
Traditional IRA - With this, the most common type of
IRA, you can contribute up to $2,000 (or 100% of your taxable compensation, whichever is less*) per
year until reaching age 70 1/2.
Roth IRA - You can establish a new Roth
IRA, or you can convert Traditional IRA assets into a Roth IRA provided you meet the income criteria.
With a Roth IRA, you can continue contributing past the age of 70 1/2 (as long as you have earned income).
Spousal IRA - A working spouse can open an IRA in the name of a non-working
spouse and contribute up to $2,000 per year. However, the maximum combined contribution to both a
Traditional IRA and a Spousal IRA is $4,000 of earned income.
Transfer IRA - You can directly transfer assets from one IRA to another,
without incurring any taxes or penalties, as long as you do not take physical receipt of your assets.
Rollover IRA - This type of IRA involves the “rolling over” of previously
invested retirement money. If you take physical possession of these assets rather than rolling them
over, you face signifigant tax penalties:
For more information about Rollover IRA options and to learn how these tax consequences
can be avoided, ask your financial consultant for the brochure entitled, “Staying on Track for Your
Dream Retirement.”
* Compensation includes: wages, salaries, tips, bonuses, commissions, income from self
employment, alimony and separate maintenance. It does not include investment income such as rental income,
interest income or dividend income.
